Y-12 Volunteers

Y-12 Staff, Family, and Friends Share Y-12 Volunteer Spirit
One of the most successful and rewarding community outreach actions sponsored by Public and Governmental Affairs is the B&W Y-12 Day of Volunteering. Y-12 employees have a long history of volunteering their time and energy to improve their communities. With more than 4,700 employees, our impact is monumental; and in 2009, volunteers again gave of their time and energy to a wide range of community projects.
As employees who have participated in the past will tell you, the reward is as much to the volunteers as to the non-profit organizations their respective projects supported. From building shelves for a Boy Scout troop to doing landscaping for a military family, the broad range of projects return an even broader feeling of satisfaction to the Y-12 employees and families who outstretch their hands to help others.

Y-12 Volunteers Continue to Help Beautify Woodland
Y-12 Volunteers, family members, & Woodland 3rd grade teacher, Gail Fillers, chose to beautify the Woodland School grounds three years in a row. Approximately 12 volunteers per year weeded, planted, trimmed, mulched, and watered the pavilion area, memorial garden, and the school's front entrance. Y-12 donated about $400 per year to help with this effort along with the many man-hours of labor necessary to accomplish this wonderful project. Two out of three years brought a day of heavy rain, but with the dedication and determination of the volunteers, the project was completed each time. We would like to thank the Y-12 volunteers and especially Tina Liles, sister of Mrs. Fillers, who organized the continuing effort to beautify Woodland's gardens. Click here to see more photos.

Woodland Team Named E-Wellness Champions
Captain Barbara Rector and her team of Maria Gall, Kim Howard, and Stacy Thompson from Woodland Elementary are Oak Ridge Schools' E-Wellness Champions. Barbara also placed second individually for the entire district. This team logged 16,775 minutes of physical activity, drank 1,667 cups of water, and consumed 813 vegetables and 574 fruits during the contest. The contest was extremely close; Barbara's team earned nearly 20,000 points and was closely followed by Nancy Anderson's team from Linden. Only 200 points separated the two teams. The team has been awarded with numerous items donated by community agencies (Double Tree, Reflections and Images, United Health Care, Fox Fitness, UT Athletics, and Chik-fil-A) as well as the E-wellness Champions Trophy which was donated by Methodist Medical Center. Oak Ridge Schools would also like to thank Heather Guinn with the University of Tennessee Extension of Anderson County who tracked and logged every team's progress.

Congratulations to Woodland Students
Woodland Elementary again earned straight A's on the state Report Card's four areas of academic achievement as the school also did in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Ninety-six percent of Woodland's students were deemed proficient or advanced in math this year, compared to 95 percent in 2007. The results show 98 percent were considered proficient or advanced this year in reading/language and writing compared to 95 percent in 2007.
And like the 2007 Report Card, Woodland maintained a B gain in value-added assessment of math scores and A's in reading/language, social studies and science. Please click the picture to the right to access the Report Card. To see Woodland’s results, please use the pull down menu to select “Oak Ridge” and then “Woodland.”
